Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Electrical Technology TrainingAir Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Electrical Technology is a comprehensive program that provides students with knowledge and skill-based training to work in HVAC/R positions. It is taught 4 days per week in morning or evening sessions for a total of 8 terms in 96 weeks. The program is 24 months during the day and evening sessions. Students must participate in 360-day or evening class sessions to complete the program.

The objective of this program is to prepare graduates to work as entry-level service and maintenance technicians in the general field of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. Graduates are also prepared to work in the electrical field and will be able to install, repair, and maintain a wide variety of electrical equipment. Graduates must pass the EPA section 608 test if employment in HVAC is the main objective for training.

Program Overview

The Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Electrical Technology Program teaches basic concepts, skills, and terminology for graduates to obtain entry-level jobs in this occupation. The HVAC program is accredited by HVAC Excellence that ensures it meets the rigorous standards and contains the necessary resources for high-quality technical education. Studies include classroom and laboratory work in these areas:

  • Fundamentals of heat transfer, refrigerants, basic electricity and circuitry, and regulations governing HVAC systems
  • Electrical safety, motor controls, basic and advanced programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and the National Electric Code (NEC)
  • Safe work practices and environmental awareness and practice
  • AC load calculations, applications, and troubleshooting of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, wiring methods, and lighting
  • Intro to Personal Computer office applications and computer networking, workplace communications, and one elective course related to each student’s interests.

Students learn to work with equipment and system components on field-grade equipment in classroom and laboratory activities. HVAC certification exams are given during the program to allow students to obtain industry competencies in the area of HVAC/R. This accelerated and hands-on training program is meaningful for students who want to earn an associate degree or improve their industry skills and knowledge in their current positions.

Program Teaching Methods

The teaching methods used in this program include classroom theory and lab sessions that are coupled with an atmosphere solidly based on “real work” HVAC concepts and standards. Studies are individualized and progress is monitored with assignments, quizzes, and laboratory evaluations.

HVAC technicians work with heating and air conditioning systems that control the temperature, humidity, and overall air quality in homes and buildings. They work with refrigeration systems to store and transport food, beverages, medicine, and other perishable items for consumers and businesses. Their typical responsibilities include:

  • Troubleshoot HVAC equipment for proper functioning or malfunctions
  • Maintain and repair existing equipment, components, and wiring
